CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Veterans Memorial High School's US Coast Guard Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps celebrated its official establishment ceremony on Thursday with current cadets and school and local leaders.
The program is the only Coast Guard JROTC in Texas and one of 14 nationwide.
VMHS Principal Scott Walker expressed pride for the more than of the 56 student cadets and what they have accomplished in the program in its first year.
"These cadets have wasted no time, getting involved in their community and living up to the standards that the Coast Guard JROTC program has set," he said during the ceremony. "Some may look at a newer program and say 'Well it'll take time. You're gonna have to give it a couple of years before you really start to see, you know, the fruits of your labor.' And we've already seen it."
Walker said bringing the program to the school will help establish a culture of courage for the students to challenge themselves.
