CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — City of Portland officials announced Tuesday that the city will be entering a Level 3 of their public health response plan after a trapped mosquito tested positive for the West Nile virus.
The mosquito was trapped on the 1100 block of Moore Avenue according to a press release.
The virus can be transferred to humans if they are bitten by an infected mosquito, however according to the city press release, there have been no reported human cases in Portland.
Those infected with the West Nile virus may experience fever, headaches, body aches, a skin rash and swollen lymph nodes.
The Level 3 response plan means that city crews will spray targeted ground-based insecticides within a half-mile radius of the detection area for two consecutive nights, heavily treat the surrounding area with mosquito larvicides and continue testing mosquitoes for the virus.
City officials encourage residents to follow personal protective measures like using mosquito repellents, and reduce potential mosquito breeding areas by draining any standing water on your property.
