CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A special benefit was held Saturday for a leader whose passing earlier this year was a huge loss for the south Texas baseball community.
William Roland died unexpectedly in January after touching the lives of athletes in our area for years.
Saturday's event raised funds for his children and to help continue his legacy here in the Coastal Bend through his academy.
Roland opened the academy back in 2004 and dedicated the next 20 years of his life to helping kids get into schools, colleges and even Major League Baseball.
"He really dedicated his life to the community and to the children. The love of his life is helping," said his mother, Nettie Roland. "His logo was 'We Don't Get Tired,' but we actually knew him by 'Everybody's Somebody, and There's Nobody Left Behind.' That's William."
Roland's mother is now taking it upon herself to carry out his dreams for the academy in her son's honor.
