CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas —
Easter is just around the corner and that means many people will be buying or making their very own cascarones to celebrate the holiday.
One local, Sharon Roggy is taking the craft of making those confetti filled eggs to whole new level.
"It's very detailed, very time consuming. You have to have a lot of patience, but it's worth it, like I said, at the end of the day," Roggy said.
Two years ago, Roggy began staying home full time to take care of her mother with dementia. She had to stop working, so for extra income she began holding garage sales. But one day, something dawned on her as she was making breakfast for her mother
"I have to make eggs for her every single morning for her. I went ahead and I said, 'I could make a little money,'" Roggy said. "I started in December, and I went all the way to April, and I made quite a bit. I was like, 'If I do this for a whole year, that would be cool.'"
Roggy has done just that. So far this year she's made 140 dozen cascarones and sold 30 dozen. While she primarily makes cascarones for her mother's medical expenses, she says she continues to make them because of the joy it brings to those who buy them.
"When I was growing up on my grandpa's ranch, cascarones were a big deal and there's a lot of good memories. Even the people that don't want to participate, you can sneak them and get them," she said.
"What I enjoy the most is them telling me their stories about, 'oh we get them, and they got popped with one and we were laughing.' You know, because it's all ages. It's young children and it's grandparents, uncles, aunts."
