Young girl recognized by city council for being a hero

When a fire broke out at her family's home on June 5, five-year-old Braelynn Ramirez alerted her mother, allowing the family to safely evacuate and call for help.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A ceremonial meeting took place before Tuesday's city council meeting, honoring small but mighty hero, 5-year-old Braelynn Ramirez who alerted her family to a house fire on June 5.

When a fire broke out at her family's home on Pecan Street near Ray High School, the young girl alerted her family of the smoke and flames.

Mayor Paulette Guajardo awarded Braelynn for her heroic, quick response.

"As the mayor of the city of Corpus Christi I would like to extend recognition to Braelynn Ramirez for her extraordinary bravery and quick thinking in a moment of crisis," Guajardo announced during Tuesday's city council meeting.

Her parents were by her side telling city leaders they too are nothing short of proud and thankful for her calm and quick response to the fire.

"I broke down in tears because my 5-year-old got my 2-year-old out of our bed that was caught on fire," Braelynn's mother said. "She alerted me to grab my phone and call 9-1-1 because without that, they would have not been there as quick and were able to get there within four minutes of being on the phone."

A fire chief on scene the morning of the fire told the Ramirez family if they had not been alerted as quickly as they were, the house would have been a total loss.

Her mom also told leaders that for career day at her school Braelynn has chosen to be a firefighter.
