PORT ARANSAS, Texas — Dozens of kids brought their surfboarding skills to the Port Aransas shore today for a Texas Surf Camps surfing competition.
The organization is actually based in Port Aransas and while they've been around for a couple decades, today was the organization's first kids-only surfing event that is part of their lone-star surf series.
Morgan and Brittany Faulkner have been teaching surfing in the Coastal Bend for the last 20 years.
“We're just really connected to the surfing community here in Texas. It's our life and we're here to try and share that with as many people as possible," Morgan said.
While they've taught people of all ages, they're even more passionate about passing along their expertise to the younger generations.
"It's really important for us to pass on surfing and what it means to us and just educating the kids on ocean safety and things you can see on the beach and in the water. Passing that knowledge on has been just a blessing in our lives," Brittany said.
The Texas Surf Camps competition brought out young surfers like Allie Botto and Aida Farese.
"At the beginning I was a little nervous, but when I got in the water, I felt good," Botto said.
"I started surfing because my dad' is a really good surfer and he forced me to go in the water. But once I went in the water, I loved doing it. My favorite part is when you just get in the water and then you get your board out and start getting waves," Farese told 3NEWS.
Growing up on the Texas coast is how eleven-year-old Ashlyn Wooldridge came to love surfing. Despite this being her first surfing competition, she was able to set her nerves aside.
"It's a little less nerve racking because I've already done it and my dad told me, 'We don't care if you're winning. We just care about having fun,'" she said.
Six-year-old Mae Mae Gainey started surfing when she was only three years old. She tells 3NEWS that Saturday's waves were no match for her skills.
"I was excited and a little nervous. The waves were kind of like 'Boom!' My second round was really good. I got every single wave except one because mom just kind of pushed me off angle," Gainey said.
