CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Former Nueces County Court at Law No. 5 Judge Terry Shamsie will have to wait until May to find out which one of the two Republican contenders for Nueces County District Attorney he will face in November.
Incumbent Jimmy Granberry and challenger James Sales are headed to a run-off, with neither of the two candidates getting 50 percent of the vote.
Granberry was appointed by Gov. Greg Abbott in October to fill the seat vacated by former Democratic DA Mark A. Gonzalez, who resigned to run for the open U.S. Senate seat.
According to his campaign website, Granberry has 35 years of criminal law as both a defense attorney and a prosecutor, having spent four years as an ADA before opening his firm in 1994.
Sales has been an assistant district attorney in the 156th Judicial District, which serves the Coastal Bend's Aransas, Bee, Live Oak and San Patricio counties, for 14 years. Before that, he worked in the Nueces County District Attorney's office for 16 years.
Prosecutor Kristi Britt also ran, but trailed Sales and Granberry late Tuesday with only four precincts left to report.
