ROCKPORT, Texas — Flooded streets, high water rescues and sewer back ups have swept across South Texas as we continue to deal with heavy rain and more is expected to fall into Friday.
Due to all the rain that fell in Rockport this week, there are many low lying areas around town that are still seeing some flooding along the streets.
We went around town with detectives Michael Cramer and Rachel Marshman with the Rockport Police Department. They took us down some of the same streets they couldn't even drive down on Wednesday.
They told us they tried to respond to a number of calls in certain neighborhoods but the flooding was too bad so they had to call in higher profile vehicles.
On Thursday, the water levels dropped and the detectives could get down every street. Still, the Chief of Police is telling people to stay off the roads.
"If you don't have to travel don't," Police Chief Greg Stevens said. "That's the biggest thing. Even if you have a high profile vehicle, we're asking people don't travel unless you absolutely have to."
Rockport City Manager Kevin Carruth tells 3News that the city could end up seeing a rainfall total this week equal to an entire year's worth of rain in a normal year.
Carruth also said that the city has a number of resources at its disposal. There are also high profile vehicles that are on standby. The city said those resources could end up being used this evening and overnight as more rain is supposed to hit. If it does, it's expected to cause flash flooding.
"I think people who have lived here for five or six decades have said they've never had rain like this," Carruth said. "The emergency management team has been working together the last couple days. The state has sent Texas Task Force One from their water group, DPS has sent their Marine Unit."
Chief Stevens said that he is able to call on other law enforcement agencies and even the National Guard for vehicles, boats or equipment. He is also working with the county and DPS to make sure there's plenty of manpower.
