CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The National Weather Service has issued a high rip current risk alert for all of the Coastal Bend beaches.
The city of Corpus Christi safety outreach coordinator Lacy Quinones said it can be dangerous if someone gets pulled into the current.
A rip current happens when the waves separate and come back in.
As part of safety measures on area beaches, the city has implemented a color coded flag system. Each flag tells visitors beach conditions for the day. The red flag warns of rip currents.
"Now, if you are caught in a rip current, the first thing you always have to remember is to remain calm," Quinones said. "You want to swim kind of parallel to the shore and take that rest and trill water if you need to."
If you are swimming by yourself, you might want to think again. Quinones said swimming with another person can save your life.
