CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — North Beach is no stranger to flooding, and with high waters filling the streets as a result of Tropical Storm Alberto, residents could be seen wading the streets on foot.
"Very high, and now we're all stuck out here," Houston native Riri said when she described how quickly North Beach flooded while she was on vacation.
The Corpus Christi Fire Department along with multiple other agencies established a post at the Whataburger on North Beach to perform welfare checks and help provide assistance to those looking to voluntarily evacuate.
"So far we made contact with about 160 to 170 individuals so far," CCFD Assistant Fire Chief Kenneth Erben said. "Most of which, about 150, have decided to shelter in place."
For residents who did decide to voluntarily evacuate, Erben said there are systems in place to help.
"Provided rides through RTA to the shelter for 17 people and three pets," he said.
3NEWS met Rudy and Stormy, a couple who was voluntarily evacuating, as they were walking down the submerged stretch of road known as Beach Avenue and Timon Boulevard. Stormy said that she was caught off guard.
"We had no idea it was like this," she said.
While the couple did manage to collect what they could before voluntarily evacuating, Stormy said that she still felt a huge loss.
"We salvaged the bit that we could salvage the rest of our stuff is gone," she said.
