CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Halloween is a week away and the weather forecast is looking rather warm. Highs will likely be in the upper 80s and lows near 70.
To figure out what a typical Halloween looks like in the Coastal Bend we can look at climate data. An average Halloween in Corpus Christi has a high of 81 degrees and a low of 61. The forecast trend for weather this year has been consistent with temperatures above the average high.
Halloween in 1993 is the earliest freeze on record for Corpus Christi. We will be now where near freezing in the Coastal Bend this year, so don't worry about having to wear the winter coast over the costume. In fact, we may not make it into the 50s until November this year. The last time it took until November to fall into the 50s it was 1934.
Halloween is looking breezy with Texas set up between an area of high pressure to the east and low pressure to our west. This pattern tends to bring a little bit more humidity into the Coastal Bend.
With more humidity, and partly cloudy skies, temperatures may not make it to 90 on Halloween, but we will be close enough to look at some of the horrifyingly hot climate data. Out of the last 137 years, the high has reached 90 on Halloween only 4% of the time, that's just six years on record. The hottest year at 95 in 1947.
90-degree temps don't happen often on Halloween. Abundant rain is also rare, only five years have seen rainfall totals top out over 1 inch. The most rain came in 1981 with 4.88 inches. It's rained over a trace only 21% of the time on record.
Rain is possible this year as a cold front tries to move through Texas. This will bring moisture up out of the Gulf of Mexico, but the latest forecast has the front stalling to our north. Rain chances go up closer to the front, and for now it looks like our chance of rain on the holiday is trending down for 2024.
It will be rather warm, but it doesn't look like we will break into the top five lists this year. Last year Corpus Christi did record the sixth coldest low on record at 44 degrees. Quite the opposite this year.
Remember weather is what happens each day, and refers to short-term changes. Climate is a way to describe the weather over a long period and can be what you expect to happen during any given season. We use averages to talk about climate, and exact numbers to talk about the weather.
Halloween will be on the 7-Day forecast featured on 3 News at 5, 6, and 10 PM tonight. See the latest updates to the Halloween forecast.
