CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Several people are working this holiday season including Corpus Christi firefighters but although calls keep them busy throughout the day, they make time for a special dinner together.
Firefighters at Fire Station 3 are celebrating Thanksgiving with a potluck-style dinner. From turkey to sweet potatoes, firefighter Aaron Hernandez said he's thankful to gather around the table today with his crew.
"It means a lot. So, being able to do this with them is kind of a big deal," Hernandez said. "A lot of times we are away from our families and so getting to have Thanksgiving with them is the next best thing."
Although the holidays can be a bit hard to squeeze a meal in together, Hernandez said they make time.
Over at Station 4, they're cooking their annual brisket Thanksgiving dinner. Something the crew looks forward to each year, especially new firefighter Matthew Villarreal.
"Although I do miss my family at home, it is a very close second," Villarreal said. "And I really don't mind working Thanksgiving with my crew."
Villarreal's father is also a fireman and he understands the commitment of working on the holidays.
A reminder from CCFD, please be careful when cooking dinner tonight and do not hesitate to call 911 if a fire occurs.
