CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — 3NEWS has learned the competition is heating up between companies wanting to sponsor the naming rights for the American Bank.
Corpus Christi City Manager Peter Zanoni said a handful of companies are now in the mix, and could have their name on the side of what is currently the American Bank Center early next year.
He did not name the finalists.
However, he said most companies were waiting for two things to happen before continuing the process: the presidential election and the city’s Bond Proposition E, which was passed in November.
The American Bank Center’s managing partner OVG 360 is in charge of the naming rights process.
Zanoni said prospective sponsors wanted to see the election results before making a final decision on such a big investment.
"Just this week, in speaking with OVG 360, they're moving forward with the finalists,” he said. “It's probably three or four really good prospects that are interested in the naming rights."
Zanoni said an extension was signed with American Bank in October that would allow the facility to keep the name for 6 months. That expires at the end of March 2025.
American Bank has sponsored the facility's name since 2004.
In April, attorney Thomas J. Henry publicly offered $12.5 million for a 10-year sponsorship deal.
Now that election is over, the finalist companies will have until March to decide whether or not to move forward.
