CCISD plans to upgrade older A/C units across several campuses

Over $1M dollars will be spent to replace 7 units at Browne Middle School, Coles High School, Mary Grett Transition Center, and Metro Elementary School of Design.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Corpus Christi ISD is spending $1,017,000 to replace several air conditioning units at Browne Middle School, Coles High School, Mary Grett Transition Center, and Metro Elementary School of Design.

Maintenance Coordinator George Dreyer said the team presents four packages on HVAC system and the district spends about three to four million dollars yearly on A/C unit upgrades.

"This is the 3rd package this year we have come out with and we go out in order from the biggest need to the smallest need," Dreyer said. "As far as we can spend, replacing these units, getting new ones, getting fresh ones."

Most of the HVAC units that are being upgraded are from 2000. Dreyer said the typical lifespan of a unit is 10 to 12 years.

"This is part of our cycling out the old A/Cs, the problem A/Cs and bringing in the new ones. Our district is just so big, we just have to keep rotating and keep working on it. You can't let these units get behind," Dreyer said.

At the end of the year, the maintenance team meets to discuss which units are having issues and the status of the older units. Dreyer said from there they make a list of which ones need to prioritized.

"And then we'll take that list and we'll divide it up to the worst ones to the ones that might last longer," Dreyer said. "And we just start going down that list longer with as much funding we can get."

Dreyer said they're working hard to stay on top of the units to prevent any A/C outages in the future.

"So, you constantly have keep changing and keep moving," Dreyer said. "Any problems that start to come up you have to get on it now. You can't wait."

Dreyer said the district is finalizing the contract in the next few weeks and will begin to order units soon. Due to delivery time, CCISD is expected to install the new units next spring or summer.
