CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The 1914 County Courthouse and everything on its grounds are in a state of disarray; drivers passing the building may find crashed utility poles and broken fences.
The structure itself continues to deteriorate as litter litters the grounds.
Nueces County Pct. 2 Commissioner John Marez said nothing seems likely to save the courthouse from eventual demolition.
"We have not had any discussions in probably at least a year or two on any final updates or next steps," he said. "So, yeah it continues to fall into disrepair unfortunately. We wanted to save it the price tag was high the last time we looked I can't imagine the price tag now to renovate or replace would cost."
The last known cost estimate for repairs to the courthouse was made several years ago, amounting to $68 million. However, due to the county accepting funds from the state in 2002 for emergency repairs, the courthouse cannot be demolished until 2027.
