CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — You may remember back in April attorney Thomas J. Henry offered $12.5 million for a 10-year deal to put his name on the American Bank Center.
The City of Corpus Christi owns the building, but city leaders delegated the naming rights process to the group that manages the facility, OVG360.
The current naming rights deal for the building expired on Sept. 30. That was the deadline to decide on a new name. However, OVG360 says it is still in the middle of negotiations with several firms interested in the naming rights.
“In our contract, with our managing partner who manages the American Bank Center for the City, OVG 360, they have the responsibility to determine the naming rights for the center and they are still in negotiation with several firms who may be interested in taking the naming rights,” City Manager Peter Zanoni said.
Who those firms are and how many there are is not yet known.
In the meantime, OVG360 is asking American Bank for an extension to keep its name on the facility until they are ready to move forward with another firm.
“We know that the American Bank is no longer interested in the naming rights, however OVG360 is going to ask them for an extension to keep their name on the facility as they felt they need more time to work with some of these entities that have interest in taking the naming rights from the American Bank Center,” Zanoni said.
The venue has been under the American Bank brand since 2004.
