Aransas County residents grateful for new tax credit

Preposition 2, which was part of the Constitutional Amendment Election in November 2023, gives child-care facility owners relief when it comes to property taxes.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Children's Coalition of Aransas County just caught a big break thanks to Preposition 2, which gives owners who run childcare facilities exemptions when it comes to property taxes.

Executive Director Dianne Nielson said childcare centers are often running on fumes.

"It's just a constant struggle for childcare centers to keep their head above water," Nielson said.

Those numbers don't lie. Nielson said that because of the new tax credit, her organization was able to save $11,000. She said that number helps when looking at the larger picture.

"Payroll is $45,000 a month, so that $11,000 it helps a lot," she said.

Aransas County Precinct 3 Commissioner Pat Rousseau said there are circumstances to consider for those who call the area home.

"We are very property rich, so we have very high property values, but most of the families and the children who attend our public schools are in the federal poverty zones," Rousseau said.

She said that securing childcare centers like Neilson's will help give parents much needed breathing room.

"It certainly relieves some of the waiting list and it provides a safe, healthy place for our families children to go," she said.

The service is something moms like Samantha Josso said make all the difference when it comes to providing adequate childcare for her daughter.

"I had to be on a waitlist to have her enrolled, but we need more development centers like this one," she said.

Neilson told 3NEWS that she plans to use the $11,000 to expand their program, so they can continue their mission of providing high-quality childcare to Aransas County residents.
