Bishop Police Department getting security upgrades, new equipment for officers with grant funds

The department is also looking to expand its animal shelter after a large donation left by a recently deceased woman in her will.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Bishop Police Chief Edward Day told 3NEWS there are state and federal grants on the way to help better equip his officers, helping them to do their job more effectively out on the highways and city streets.

The list of equipment includes new body cameras and shields for each officer, plus rifle vests.

"So, our department was awarded over $350,000 in grants from the Governor's Office so we will be utilizing that for equipment," Day said. "For new equipment, body cams and shields for ballistic rifle vests to be able to equip our officers."

With the funds the department will also be able to purchase new vehicles. Its current aging fleet includes one police unit that’s eight years old.

The police chief also told 3NEWS about the City’s plans to repair and replace mold covered walls at the department, among a number of improvements.

"In addition, the glass areas in the lobby are going to have ballistic film placed over them that way if we ever had a security threat in this area, it would protect our staff back here behind the glass," Day said. "We’re going to be replacing the doors to security and ballistic on these doors as well."

The city's animal shelter also recently received funds as someone in the community willed the police department $200,000 to go towards shelter improvements. Day said he will use the cash to expand the facility to be able to hold more animals.
