CCFD Fire Chief explains why Deer Park pipeline fire has to burn itself out

3NEWS asked Corpus Christi Fire Chief Brandon Wade for his expert opinion.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Many of you may be wondering why fire crews in Deer Park are not trying to put out the flames spewing from that pipeline.
3NEWS asked Corpus Christi Fire Chief Brandon Wade for his expert opinion.

"The challenge is if you go and put that fire out with the heat and the other secondary fires, from a playground or building or maybe any other fires - when you put the product out but its still flowing product and there is still heat or fire present then you could have a reignition and potential explosion," said Wade.

Lodging and other accommodations for evacuated residents have been made available through Energy Transfer, the pipeline company.
Representatives said other financial assistance will also be offered.
