Corpus Christi Independent School District under fire from local labor unions

Union President Nancy Vera says accountability for issues like low test scores should go back to district leadership not just the teachers.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The area's largest labor union, the Corpus Christi American Federation of Teachers, is calling out CCISD leaders, alleging the district is blaming poor test scores on the TEA Carnegie Foundation and campus personnel.

"The scores had decreased in many areas, including math," union President Nancy Vera said.

It's an issue she says goes back to district leadership.

"The curriculum that they were implementing, which is a road curriculum, telling teachers what to teach, when to teach and how to teach it," she said.

Vera, however, is not alone. Other organizations showed up to voice their concerns as well.

"The Corpus Christi American Federation of Teachers, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and the Communication Workers of America reiterated concerns for their curriculum and the failed strategy for over two-to-three years," she said.

3NEWS reached out to the Corpus Christi Independent School District in response to the claims being made the AFT.

"Corpus Christi ISD has an unwavering commitment to working collaboratively with our teachers to provide high-quality instruction to all students. As we shared with the board during Monday’s meeting, our analysis of the 2023-2024 school year revealed areas of improvement we can and are making at the district level, including ensuring we provide exemplary professional development to our teachers. We are in regular contact with teachers to get their feedback, and we take pride in working side by side with our teachers for the benefit of all students."
