Celebrate Harry Potter's 'birthdae' at downtown coffee shop

The Coffee Mugg owner said she hopes those who love the magical series will visit the hidden gem spot while wearing their finest Potter duds.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Represent your Hogarts House colors  in downtown Corpus Christi at the Coffee Mugg. The book and movie- inspired coffee shop has celebrated Harry Potter's birthday for nearly six years. They will host an event on Wednesday where you can get some pictures, 'Happee Birthdae' cupcakes, and of course themed drinks.

The birthday event will include a photo op area for guests to take pictures and the 'Birthdae Latte' which includes raspberry and white chocolate for the celebration.

"We wanted to do something inspired by. I wanted to do something kind of witty. In the film there is a character called Sirius Black. This one we call the 'Sirius Scotch,' which is chocolate and butterscotch." Susana Almaguer told 3News. "I love that people are like come in, instead of like can I get a vanilla late, we have a name for it."

Almaguer is the owner of the coffee spot. She created the Coffee Mugg to bring together Potter-heads years ago and says the shop has been growing ever since. The shop has hosted other non-Harry Potter events in the past, including themed nights for Game of Thrones, Friends, and The Office. "We used to do events at night, but now what we are doing is kind of an all-day thing."

"I love that this is Harry Potter inspired," Almaguer told 3News "I also wanted other things in here too. Its where people could feel all different types of nerds. nerds aren't a bad thing. I am proud to say I am a nerd."

The Coffee Mug started out as a small shop with minimal furniture and decorations. Almaguer had a decorator named Rebecca who helped bring the Coffee Mugg to life, including the snake going in and out of the walls. Many of the decorations in the restaurant have been found in thrift shops, garage sales, and donations from the community. "This shop became community based. a lot of the knickknacks you see, they are all from the community."

It isn't just locals who help business, but also the tourists. "One of my favorite things is when people are tourists here, they have never been to corpus, they just look up coffee shop and they walk in and they're just like 'wait a second. That looks a lot like and that looks a lot like.' and they just like 'wait a second. this kind of reminds me of Harry Potter.'"

The coffee shop owner said she is also looking towards the future. She told 3News she hopes to expand her business with outdoor seating, nightly live music, and either going to a bigger location or opening a second location on the southside.

Anyone planning on attending the Coffee Mugg is encouraged to dress up for the festivities. "I encourage everyone to come dressed up in their best Harry Potter Hogwarts outfits." The Coffee Mugg will be open from 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday for guests to enjoy Harry Potter's Birthday.

Almaguer also encourages the everyone to continue supporting small businesses to help grow community support. "We hope we can continue to have community support. We hope everyone can just always show the love to the Coffee Mugg, like they've been for the past six years."
