CHRISTUS Spohn's EMR program seeks to extend 6-year deal to 12 years

The health care company and county agreed to keep the program in town for six more years last December.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — CHRISTUS Spohn is looking to extend the six-year agreement to keep the Emergency Medicine Residency Program in town to 12 years, according to County Commissioner Brent Chesney.

Last December, the Nueces County Hospital District and CHRISTUS Spohn Health Systems finalized a $21 million agreement to keep the program running for the next six years after it was threatened to be shutdown.

Chesney said the next step is putting that agreement on paper in the form of a solid contract.

"We're ready to go right now," he said. "We can get that amended tomorrow if we need be, but we have to have Spohn's willingness to sit at the table and be willing to put it in a contract."

Once a contract with the new 12-year agreement is signed the two can get to work on funding.
