Coastal Bend schools prepare for new STAAR test grading AI regulation

Artificial Intelligence will now be used to grade the written response portion of the STAAR test. It's something educators said they have checks and balances for.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — School across the state are navigating a new standardized testing regulation that utilizes artificial intelligence to grade open-ended questions for the STAAR test.

Skidmore-Tynan Assistant Superintendent  Stephanie Ashworth said that her district is already accustomed to digital testing. She said that while technology is advancing, there are checks and balances to make sure grading isn't compromised.

"If there is something that is not within their parameter as there grading it, it is flagged and put off to the side. and a human grader will then grade that," she said.

In a recent report from the Texas Tribune, it's a move that will save the Texas Education Agency more than $15 million. Ashworth said it's beneficial as technology becomes more reliable.

"We're already using this technology like for our TSI test tackers, so this is a natural progression," she said.

Education Service Center Region 2 Administrator Rebecca Johnson said that as the STAAR test evolves, so must the procedures surrounding it.

"TEA has used the automatic scoring engine in our December EOC and determined that there was not a big discrepancy in what they had seen previously with scores," she said.

Johnson said that she believes the new program will make grading more efficient in the future.

"They needed to have a more streamline process for grading those submissions," she said.
