CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The subcommittee formed to advise on the public libraries' book-selection policy was dissolved during a Corpus Christi Library Board meeting Friday.
With the subcommittee unable to resolve a 2-2 stalemate, a recommendation couldn't be made to the complete library board to change the Corpus Christi Public Libraries' policy.
The debate over the appropriateness of certain DEI materials in the young adult section of the libraries comes to an end has lasted several months.
Members of the LGBTQ+ community and their supporters saw Friday's result as a victory.
"Personal freedoms, families being able to choose what materials are available to their children, and not having to have someone dictate from on high -- or from out of town -- what materials their children have access to," said local Pride Corpus Christi past president Tom Tagliabue.
Other residents, however, voiced disappointment.
"The only books that we recommended had obscene materials, obscene illustrations, graphic depictions of sex,” said subcommittee Joan Carrillo. “That's what we were recommending, and the library already does do that to a certain extent and there are laws and Internet policies regarding that as well, so it's not unheard of to consider where you place materials."
