CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Corpus Christi Hooks took to the mound for Strike Out Stroke Night at Whataburger Field, Friday night.
They were joined by Christus Spohn Health System for the annual event that aims to raise awareness and educate the community about strokes.
3NEWS spoke with one survivor who began experiencing severe symptoms like tunnel vision, nausea and an excruciating headache while driving.
She was rushed to the emergency room and saved by Dr. Paul Schmitt, a neurosurgeon at Spohn Shoreline, who told us she suffered a ruptured aneurism.
Dr. Schmitt says sometimes these medical emergencies come down to bad luck, but he offered some tips for how to best prevent aneurism and stroke in your daily life, starting with clean living.
"Follow your cholesterol, make sure it's at goal," he said. "If you're a diabetic, make sure your blood sugar is well controlled. If you're hypertensive, make sure that your blood pressure is well controlled."
As for survivor Belinda Delgado, she's grateful for her second chance at life.
"It feels really good. I get to be with my family for some more time," said Delgado.
