CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — On Thursday 3NEWS learned from our sister station in San Antonio, KENS5, that a Corpus Christi mother and her son were killed in a crash Wednesday night.
The mother, Vanesa Ramos, and her 5-year-old son Solumen Lopez were walking on the sidewalk when they were hit by car. They were minutes away from their home in Stone Oak in the city's northside.
SAPD officials say 56-year-old Marlon Daniels was behind the wheel, reportedly speeding before he jumped the curb and crashed into the mother and son.
Daniels is now facing charges of intoxication manslaughter.
A family member of the mother and son issued a statement to 3NEWS on Friday. It reads in part:
"My cousin Vanessa was a kind, loving and amazing person...This loss is a huge one for all but especially her 12-year-old daughter, her mom, her sister, brother and all the family...I'm angry at this man for choosing to drive drunk and change the course on this family."
The family is urging the community to never drink and drive but to find any other way to get home without making the same choice the driver did which has forever changed their family.
