CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Many gathered at CCISD's new Creekside Elementary School campus for the ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday, but even with a cafeteria full of celebration, there are still concerns regarding safety.
Corpus Christi Dist. 5 Councilman Gil Hernandez said the core reason behind the creation of Creekside Elementary was to help with overcrowding on the city's South Side.
But there's an issue, he said, drivers may notice before they make it to the building.
"Currently there's only one way to access this road is through Yorktown," Hernandez said.
He said there are plans in place to address the issue.
"Eventually Oso Parkway will extend and connect behind the Rancho Vista area, but that's still some ways away," Hernandez said.
Corpus Christi Independent School District Superintendent Roland Hernandez said the traffic concerns and new campuses are all a testament to the growth happening on the city's South Side.
"A lot of new subdivisions that have been opened," he said. "There's also going to be several apartment complexes that are going to be coming up along Yorktown."
Hernandez said that addressing these safety concerns is crucial, especially as development continues.
"Next year we'll be opening a new middle school right across the parking lot," he said.
CCISD's previous two new school constructions -- the new Carroll High School and Cullen Place Elementary -- opened without school zones in place in 2022 and 2023, respectively.
3NEWS reached out to the city of Corpus Christi to check on the status of Creekside's school-zone signs.
They responded with a statement that reads:
"School zone signs will be added around the new Creekside Elementary School. CCISD will be installing these signs."
