CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Multiple Corpus Christi Fire Department crews tried to extinguish a fire at the Villa del Sol condominium complex on North Beach for hours Friday afternoon, according to Assistant Chief Billy Belyeu.
No injuries from residents or firefighters have been reported.
City Manager Peter Zanoni told 3NEWS a total of 18 fire units and three medic units responded to the scene.
Resident Anna Guerra was in the building with her mother and daughter when she heard yelling coming from the hallway. A woman knocked on her door and when she opened it she saw the halls were filled with smoke.
“So, I grabbed my mom, my daughter and my purse and I ran out of there," Guerra said. "We were pulling fire alarms, not one worked, went knocking on several units and we were able to get about three families out. Everybody made it out safely, thank God.”
Guerra said that there were no sprinklers in the building and no working fire alarms. She said that she can only hope that some of her belongings were saved, as she had been living in the condominiums for the last three months and left with only the clothes on her back.
“I’m hoping people can manage to salvage some of their belongings out of the building. I left with nothing," she said.
This is a developing story. Stay with 3NEWS for updates.
