Embattled former medical examiner Adel Shaker in the clear after grand jury declines charges

Dr. Adel Shaker was accused of botching medical examinations while serving as the chief medical examiner in Nueces County.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A Nueces County grand jury has declined to indict Dr. Adel Shaker on criminal allegations, attorneys for the former medical examiner announced.

Attorneys for the embattled former medical examiner said the Texas Medical Board reviewed the complaints against the doctor and also declined to take action against him.

"Dr. Shaker is grateful for the actions of the grand jury and hopes to rebuild his life and restore his reputation after intense media scrutiny and attention, he hopes to enjoy his privacy with his family," stated his lawyers.

In a letter released to media outlets, Shaker's representatives stated the grand jury issued a "No Bill" after deciding that there was no probable cause to charge the doctor with the felony crimes he was accused of in recent years.

Nueces County District Attorney Jimmy Granberry said it's a simple directive when it comes to the decisions of the the grand jury.

"They tell us true bill or no bill, and in this case they said no bill," he said.

Granberry said the case has also been looked at by other entities.

"Shaker had been cleared of any ethical violations by the Texas Medical Board, they didn't see anything wrong with the evidence that was presented to them," he said.

More than 30 relatives filed a civil suit alleging the Nueces County Medical Examiner's Office of conducting botched autopsies prior to April 2022.

The families were also suing over claims of negligence on the part of the former Chief Medical Examiner Adel Shaker and Deputy Chief Medical Examiner Sandra Lyden.

Shaker was under investigation for allegedly tampering or falsifying a government record, unauthorized practice of medicine, and abuse of a corpse.

Lisa Greenberg, a local attorney who represented Shaker, said that while it is possible for new information to be taken back to the grand jury, the odds of that happening are low.

"After that two year investigation there was not anything to proceed with Dr. Shaker. So the citizens found that there wasn't enough to charge him with," she said.

Greenberg said that after two years, and Shaker being under intense investigation, he's now hoping for normalcy.

"He's very grateful and relived and just wants to be done with this and move on with his life," she said.

His attorneys are now calling investigations against Shaker made by the former District Attorney's office "unfounded."

"It has been over two years that Dr. Shaker has been subjected to intense media and public scrutiny, faced embarrassment and damage to his name and reputation by the prior District Attorney's administration."
