CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — City leaders from Corpus Christi and Mathis will meet with Texas Parks and Wildlife officials Friday for a press conference outlining their goals to improve safety at Lake Corpus Christi after a season of tragic drowning deaths.
Mathis city manager Cedric Davis says leaders are concerned about the number of lives lost at Lake Corpus Christi over the past year.
In a release sent to media, Davis said his management team has been tasked with finding ideas, identifying partnerships, and developing resources to minimize the loss of life at the lake.
At the press conference, the city says they will discuss the following goals:
- Create a regional coalition taskforce of regional resources, to provide a coordinated joint effort to provide water safety orientation and vouchers for life jackets.
- Possibly provide a Sea Tow Foundation life jacket program, and public signage (Life Jackets Saves Lives) at key recreational and shoreline areas at Corpus Christi Lake.
- Prepare parents of children and or weak swimmers on water dos and don’ts to prevent drownings.
- How to respond in case of water emergencies.
Davis said in the city's press release that his staff were particularly moved to action by the deaths of the following drowning victims: 13-year-old Jermiah De Leon-Smith, June 2024; 19-year-old Chris Ruiz, June 2024; 29-year-old Pedro Aguirre, November 2024; 4-year-old Gabriel Gonzalez. The city manager stated that the inter-city coalition believes working together to improve water competency and water smarts presents an opportunity for safer water activities while at Lake Corpus Christi.
