CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The holidays are a time to gather with friends and family, and for many this includes celebrating by partaking in holiday "spirits."
You may have noticed liquor stores were particularly busy this Thanksgiving eve and this is likely because they will all be closed tomorrow.
This isn't just to allow workers to spend the day with their loved ones, it's actually a Texas law known as a "blue law."
Blue laws originated around 321 BCE in England as a way to promote the observance of the Christian Sabbath by restricting the sale of certain items -- like alcohol -- and prohibiting certain activities on Sundays and certain holidays.
For us here in Texas today, this means no buying booze on Sundays, Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year's Day. The law also makes car dealerships not able to be open a full weekend, they must be closed on Saturday or Sunday.
So there you go, now you have a friendly reminder to swing by your favorite liquor store before they close Wednesday evening, or you have some cool facts to share around the table tomorrow.
