CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Children often dream about what they will be when they grow up: a rock star, an astronaut or a firefighter, but many don't make plans for how they will get there.
Maite Yuleana Rodriguez did.
Maite was one of the 19 students who was killed during the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde on May 24, 2022.
The 10-year-old had a passion for sea life, and wanted TAMU-CC to be a part of her journey in becoming a marine biologist.
In a great example of beauty coming from tragedy, the Island University found out about Maite's dream and reached out to her mother, Ana, to set up a scholarship in her daughter's honor.
Just four days after the horrific loss, a seed of hope was planted and the Maite Yuleana Rodriguez Memorial Scholarship was created to benefit students with dreams from Uvalde, just like the young girl for whom it is named.
Students who are interested in applying for scholarship must be a full-time marine biology undergraduate student with a minimum 3.0 GPA. for more information call (361) 825-3703 or email scholarships@tamucc.edu.
The school also is accepting donations in order to help fund the quasi-endowed scholarship online, by check or over the phone.
