CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas —
It's a year-round program, but the city's Meals on Wheels take extra pride in helping those in need during the holidays.
Hundreds of meals are delivered to homebound residents daily, but a special Thanksgiving meal was delivered to residents today just ahead of the holiday.
"You know, we deliver 500 meals daily, year-round, but at this time of year it's something that we enjoy doing. I think my team is excited about doing this time of year because people are very thankful that we're able to do this," said Parks and Recreation director, Robert Dodd.
Meals on wheels serves people from Calallen all the way to the island, and on this Thanksgiving eve, they made a special delivery of pre-packaged turkey dinners.
Nutrition services program manager for Meals on Wheels, Collin Clark prides himself in being able to help hundreds of people.
"There's a lot of people in the community that sometimes during the holidays feel a little alone. I feel that the work that we do here is able to go ahead and make them feel loved and then make sure they're okay throughout out the holidays, get that food to them, kind of warm them up and give them that holiday cheer," Clark said,
Yolanda Aguirre and her husband Ralph, a Vietnam veteran, are two of many who received a thanksgiving dinner from meals on wheels.
Yolanda said they first started receiving meals from the city when Ralph began having health issues.
"They balance the meals, you know, and we stuck to that keep it balanced, to take care of ourselves. The vegetables, everything. They keep it nutritious, which is good. They're so good," she said.
Aguirre says receiving help from meals on wheels on thanksgiving means a lot to her and Ralph.
"Ohhh we love that. He loves the turkey! Oh yes, the stuffing, everything, the pie. Oh my god. Everything is so delicious when they bring it," she said.
