How the local community celebrated MLK Day despite canceled march

Icy roads did not stop this group from honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and celebrating his birthday.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The celebration of the life and legacy of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. still took place Monday despite road conditions

Many gathered at the newly finished Coastal Bend Food Bank, for a day of community service in honor of Dr. King.

Multimedia Communications Coordinator for the Coastal Bend Food Bank, Micaela Calderon-Stewart, said the food bank never takes a day off.

"MLK Day is always a big day for us because it's always a day on, not a day off here at the Coastal Bend Food Bank, and as you can clearly see we have volunteers show up throughout the day," Calderon-Stewart said.

Some of those volunteers included members of the Student Volunteer Connection organization from Texas A&M University- Corpus Christi.

Event co-coordinator with the student organization, Matthew Johnson, said they made a commitment, stuck with it and pressed through the adversity the icy day had to offer.

"It was kind of dicey getting out here because of all the fog and the ice," Johnson said. "But I made a commitment to help people and I'm not going to break that commitment. I love my community, I love doing service and I felt there's no better way to show that than on MLK Day."

Now while the annual 38th MLK Commemorative March was cancelled this year, the Corpus Christi Alumnae Chapter President of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., Nikela Pradier, assured me that plans for next year's march still stand.

"We are sad that we could not safely gather with our community today," Pradier said. "We will be back next year, planning just as we planned this year, inviting the community just as we did this year and encouraging people just as we did this year to take seriously the obligation for us to honor Dr. King's life."

Nikela encourages everyone to serve beyond just MLK Day and show up and show out for our community on a consistent basis.
