Icy roads cause numerous accidents and rollovers

Highway 77 in western Nueces County and Kleberg County proved dangerous for drivers on Monday as ice on the roadways caused them to wreck.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — State Troopers responded to one crash after another throughout the Coastal Bend Monday morning. Some three dozen in all as ice along the highways was the undoing of many drivers.

It was just before noon along Highway 77 at FM 70 in Bishop when 3NEWS spotted a large number of emergency crews on the overpass.

There was a truck lying on its top and it was crushed.

A wrecker service was working to get it upright. The driver of the truck hit some ice as he was driving in the northbound lane then skidded into the guardrails in the median. His truck flipped over and landed on the southbound lanes.

The two men inside were on their way to work and were able to get out of the truck with barely a scratch.

Sr. Corporal James Hildreth with DPS gave some advice to drivers who are out on the roadways when it's freezing outside.

"The best thing is to just go really slow and be as safe as possible," Hildreth said. "Don't get into a rush. The best thing to do is stay home on mornings like this and have a cup of coffee."

A Kleberg County corrections officer probably wished he had done that on this Monday morning.

He flipped his truck a number of times and ended up in a field upside down. That rollover taking place along FM 665 and CR 87 west of Driscoll.

The driver hit a patch of ice, slid off the roadway and then his truck rolled over. He was taken to a hospital but should be OK.

"This is my second crash of the morning the other one was on County Road 38," Hildreth said. "Uh, it was the same situation, spun out but, that guy hit a telephone pole."

Juan Ramos also flipped his truck along Highway 77 just north of Bishop. He too was headed to work until he hit ice.

"The bridge had a lot of ice and then I don't know I shaked from side to side and then flipped that's it," Ramos said.

DPS officials said while they can't control the weather, drivers can slow down to avoid rolling over. They can also make sure they're wearing their seatbelts so they stand a better chance of walking away from a crash like one of those that took place today where a number of drivers somehow walked away without going to the hospital.
