CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — On Monday afternoon Nueces County constables gathered at the courthouse to get fitted for new bulletproof vests.
County commissioners recently approved the purchase for all 53 constables in the county to receive the new safety gear.
Precinct 2 Constable Jason McCahan and Sgt. Nate Perez said the vests offer some "peace of mind" as they face their daily tasks protecting our community.
"They save lives," McCahan said. "Most of us go to the doors, knock on the door and whoever is on the other side of the door, they don't see a constable . . . they say police officer and, you know, sometimes unfortunate things happen and they we get shot at. So it saves you from, you know, the unfortunate things happening."
"It gives the families peace of mind that they do have the latest protection and these vests that we're getting are actually some of the newest line vests that are in the market."
The constables told 3NEWS the vests expire every five years, so these came in due time thanks to commissioners who expedited the purchase.
