Pilot stormwater program to stop trash, debris from washing into bay

Crews are working to build three test sites along the Bayfront.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Mayor Paulette Guajardo said the City is looking to install three different "debris catch systems" along the Bayfront to try and stop cups, lids and other trash from washing into the bay after heavy rain

"It came to be because of all the trash and debris that was just literally flowing into our bays," Guajardo said about the $1.9 million pilot program. "I was very much behind it and has probably been over a year ago. It should have been done sooner but here’s the thing. Today we’re addressing it so it’s never too late to do something good."

Public Works Director Ernie De La Garza said the Bay Water Quality project should be completed by November.

The site over by Water's Edge Park is one of three along the Bayfront which will be used to test different catch systems. A baffle box system will go in here while the other two sites at Cole Park and Louisiana will have either a trash rack system installed or this hydrodynamic separator.

The winner will basically be the one which filters out the most debris plus meet a few other requirements.

"Ease of maintenance, low cost and efficient in terms of how we go in a function before and after storms," De La Garza said.

The Public Works Director believes the pilot study could take a year unless we get enough storms between then and the start of summer to be able to declare a winning catch system.
