Was the water in Port Aransas contaminated all summer?

The short answer is yes, but officials say the water was (and still is) safe to drink.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Concerned viewers from Port Aransas told 3NEWS they received a letter from Nueces County in August notifying them about contaminated water.

The letter alerted residents to the increased presence of trihalomethanes, the byproduct of a new water disinfectant that can harm several organs over time.

The byproduct first showed up in a water quality test in March when that disinfectant was first used.

Nueces County Water Control & Improvement District #4 manager Scott Mack said they immediately increased tank activity to filter the byproducts out, but that initial test still put them over their annual average when they tested again in June.

"We improved by 75 percent, but it didn't get our average below the annual requirement for notification," Mack said. "In my opinion, I don't believe there's a concern. I drink the water daily and use it for everything I do."

The next test of Port Aransas' water was scheduled for Wednesday, but rain postponed those plans.

Nueces County Water said that if any hazardous materials make it into the water supply that warrant a water boil notice you will hear it from them on their website and in releases to the media
