CHECK THIS OUT: G-PISD school officer plays original piano tune

Senior Officer J.D. Hinojosa said the piano melody is an original piece that he is working on.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Some days you just need to see something positive-- that's the sentiment one Portland Police Department senior officer knows all too well.

Sr. Offc. J.D. Hinojosa is a school resource officer described as a man of many talents. The Alice native recently shared an impromptu video of himself 'tickling the ivories' from earlier this year as classes were winding down ahead of summer.

Officer Hinojosa told 3NEWS he has been playing piano nearly his whole life-- a self-taught master who first took to the keys at 10 years old.

The 25-year officer said he cannot read music. Instead-- he listens by ear.

"I visit the music classroom from time to time on my rounds while the kids are in class."

"I'm not a professional musician at all," he said. "I think people who can read music are extremely talented. I can't do it. But if I hear it, I can play it."

Hinojosa used played in local rock bands while growing up in the area.

The master peace officer often holds safety and educational presentations for G-PISD students. And while he won't necessarily show off his musical talent for the students, he is certainly looking forward to the upcoming school year.

"We really do like interacting with [students] and just letting them know we're here for them in a difficult situation."

"Sometimes when were out patrolling the streets, they see us and it's not for good reasons," he said. "At school, we're able to get to know them and redirect them on the right path if necessary."

"I love being here."
