Hundreds attend public meeting on TWIA rate hike Friday morning

Texas Department of Insurance's decision on the TWIA rate hike is expected by Oct. 15.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Hundreds attended a public meeting at the Embassy Suites on Friday to share their thought's on Texas Windstorm Insurance Association's plan to increase rates by 10 percent.

Realtors, business owners and veterans all in the crowd with the same goal, to ask that the rate hike be denied.

The meeting was hosted by the Texas Department of Insurance, who will have the final say on the matter with their decision expected by Oct. 15.

"By that date I may approve, or disapprove the rate filing," Insurance Commissioner Cassandra Brown said. "If I disapprove the rate filing I must give the TWIA board my reasoning. They will have an opportunity to address those concerns if they choose. If I take no action the proposed rate change will go into effect."

Friday's meeting was one of two public hearing's that happened this week, the other was in Galveston.
