CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — High school football kicks off at the end of the week and with it a community tradition dedicated to helping those in our community.
The first game of the season for several area schools have been designated Peanut Butter Bowls to highlight the need to fight food insecurity.
Football fans are encouraged to donate jars of peanut butter to be collected for local hunger relief organizations to distribute to families with children who may not have enough food to get through the weekend.
Ray High School head football coach Craig Charlton, said when they first got the call to join, it was an immediate yes.
"Anything that we can help out our local community and food bank to help them feed our families is a great deal and by getting our community involved it makes a big difference in their lives too," said Charlton.
Three area schools participated last year with Flour Bluff leading the area with over 1200 jars going to the Coastal Bend Food Bank.
The Hornets ranked 14th out of 84 high schools.
