A witness who was getting into his car nearby saw the entire thing and then tried to help the victim. He spoke with 3NEWS Sunday but asked us to keep his identity private.

He said a man walked up to the victim's car, opened the driver's door, took out a knife and began to fight him. After the fight moved from the car to the street, the witness said the victim fell to the ground with stab wounds.

He said he tried to help and that it's difficult to know the victim did not survive.

"I felt like nobody was going to help him, except me, and it was my responsibility to initiate the action to save his life," the main said. "I destroys me that I could not save him."

Other people nearby described hearing screaming and then seeing a swarm of cops respond.

The witness said he was at least able to be there for the victim as he was dying.

"I was there for the final moments of his life, and that to me means everything, and I'll never forget being that person that he needed."
