CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — As their last event of Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, students at Texas A&M University- Corpus Christi made blankets for people experiencing homelessness in our community.
The annual awareness week brings communities from across the country together to draw attention to the local homeless population through education, fundraising and volunteering.
Students showed up to tables full of warm fabric to create no-sew blankets as we enter the colder months.
3NEWS spoke with one student, Frank Nikodym, who was thrilled by the number of fellow Islanders who came out, hoping to make a difference in our community.
"An event like this is great for so many reasons," he said. "I think it gives the students an excellent opportunity to ground themselves to the people that we're trying to support with a project like this, being able to create these products themselves and then give them to people, and I think that connection there has a real impact on both the people themselves and the students."
