TAMU-CC celebrated the legacy of Dr. Hector P. Garcia on his day of recognition

Hector P. Garcia Day is celebrated the third Wednesday of September in Texas.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, Texas A&M Corpus Christi honored the founder of the American GI Forum Dr. Hector P. Garcia for Dr. Hector P. Garcia Day.

The day is celebrated the third Wednesday of September.
The Island University, which is home to the largest Dr. Hector P. Garcia collection, has been honoring the Mexican-American civil rights activist since 2009.

His daughter Dr. Cecilia Garcia Akers said that even after all these years she still remembers the valuable lessons her father left behind.

"One of the things he taught me was to never judge anyone. To embrace people who look different from you. So, I think this is a simple message we need to get across," said Dr. Akers.

Dr. Akers said she is proud of the community for continuing to honor the memory and hard work of her father.

Dr. Garcia was most known for fighting for the rights of all Hispanic Americans and veterans who were denied housing, medical and educational opportunities.
