Leaders reflect on new initiatives at Tuloso-Midway's State of the District luncheon

Texas Education Agency Commissioner Mike Morath was the event's keynote speaker.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Tuloso Midway ISD highlighted achievements and ongoing initiatives at their State of the District luncheon on Thursday.

City leaders, administrators and staff reviewed recent major security upgrades and a new no cellphone policy the district adopted this school year.

Texas Education Agency Commissioner Mike Morath was the event's keynote speaker. He is a strong advocate for distraction-free learning, and recently called on lawmakers to ban cellphones in all Texas public schools

"There is a large research that shows that cell phones are incredibly distracting to any kind of cognitive process," Morath said. "You probably don't even need that research if you have a cellphone cause they are distracting, and so when cellphones can be removed from the classroom, kids learn more. We want kids to learn as much as possible in schools."

Another topic discussed during the luncheon was AI grading replacing human graders, something several districts across the state have filed lawsuits against .

Morath explained how this works.

"There are questions that are graded by people, and you can think about certain multiple choice questions that are sort of graded quickly by a computer and we have an incredible level of quality control systems in place to ensure that every single question is accurately graded," he said.
