CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Fall is here, but temperatures don't immediately fall in Corpus Christi. On average the first arrival of cool air tends to come in October. For example, since 1943 the average first day with a high below 80 degrees is Oct. 1.
So far the high temperature for the first two days of fall has been 94 degrees, and there's no clear sign of the temperature falling out of the 90s anytime soon. The Climate Prediction forecast keeps an above-normal chance for temperatures to be warmer than normal through Oct 8. Even with the arrival of a cold front Wednesday evening, Sep. 25.
While the average temperature will likely stay above normal, there is a chance we see below-normal low temperatures behind the next cold front. Corpus Christi may fall into the 60s for a low on Friday and Saturday morning.
If the low falls below 70 on Friday morning this will be the first time since May 18. That will be 130 days with low temperatures at or above 70 degrees. This would tie the tenth-longest streak on record.
The records used date back to 1887, so it is fair to say this would be a year with warmer-than-normal low temperatures. We are a little behind schedule for reaching this milestone. Typically the first night cooler than 70 degrees happens around September 14.
