CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Bishop Athletic Director George Luna has died, according to a post from the district on social media Thursday.
In the post, the district spoke highly of Luna, saying that his legacy reached several students, faculty and staff.
"Bishop's beloved Athletic Director, George Luna gained his wings. For the past 23 years, George was an instrumental part of the lives of thousands of Bishop Badgers. He was loved by all staff, students, and parents. He supported all Badgers in everything they did and he loved them wholeheartedly."
Luna was the former football coach for the Badgers before stepping aside in June of 2015 to focus on his athletic director duties.
Under his leadership, the Badgers went to state in baseball, softball and girls' basketball. That team has long since been coached by his wife, Sherry.
Luna was hospitalized earlier this month with heart issues as he awaited a liver transplant.
George Luna was 51 years old.
