Captain Conrad to host lifesaving event for children on how to stay safe

He will be hosting a children's book signing and safety show event shedding light on safety for kids.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Conrad Gonzales, aka "Captain Conrad," will soon be in the Coastal Bend spreading his wealth of knowledge on the topic of safety to children in our community.

His trip down to Corpus Christi is inspired by his latest children's book, "Captain Conrad's Safety Tips," which covers safety scenarios and issues of all kinds that are designed to teach children how they can stay safe. Gonzales is hosting the book signing and safety show event in light of his book to help emphasize to children that it's never too late, or early, to learn about safety.

Around 1995, Gonzales wrote his first two songs titled "Stop, drop and roll" and "Buckle up."  Back then, he said it was just for his children, but he would also go perform those songs at his children's school just for fun. Now he's made it a goal to educate as many kids as possible on staying safe.

"The overall message is to ensure that at an early age, they are aware of the dangers that can happen," Gonzales said. "If we can teach one child not to play with matches, that's one less call that the firefighters have to respond to."

Gonzales is a retired firefighter and paramedic out of San Antonio and knows all too well of the dangers that can come when safety is not prioritized.

Because of that, he now adds author, musician, songwriter and performer to his list of accomplishments, and will be showcasing those talents during his upcoming event. There will be a mixture of singing, reading and learning taking place that will certainly help keep those young minds engaged. To top it off, Gonzales will be doing it all dressed in a firefighter uniform with his guitar in hand.

The best surprise that kids can expect is there will be a fire truck present at the event as well.

Gonzales added that he does not plan on stopping educating children on safety anytime soon.

"If you can instill a safe environment, a safe attitude, they will live to be safe," Gonzales said. "And they in turn, can teach somebody about safety."

If you're interested in meeting Captain Conrad and want your children to learn some safety tips, the lifesaving event will take place on Saturday, June 15, beginning at 1 p.m. at Barnes & Noble.

His book will be for sale at his event at the bookstore and is also available on Amazon, Target and through his publisher, Halo Publishing.
