City reducing water use ahead of Stage 3 water restrictions

For the average homeowner, Stage 3 restrictions mean no outdoor watering, even with a handheld hose, unless it is needed for your home's foundation.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — City leaders say that above-normal temperatures and below-normal rainfall are predicted in the coming months, putting our primary water sources closer to drying up.

The combined levels of Lake Corpus Christi and the Choke Canyon Reservoir are hovering at 20 percent.

Dipping below that threshold will call for Stage 3 water restrictions, something the City now expects to declare by mid-December.

The City announced this week that it has already started to reduce its own use of water by cutting back and even stopping landscape irrigation at some City facilities and parks.

Fountains like the Watergardens will only be allowed to circulate water so that equipment can be maintained.

"I would like to say that our community has been extremely receptive, they've done a heck of a great job, you know, trying to do their part," Corpus Christi Water COO Drew Molly said. "You know the tough part from our business is that we're asking them to do more which we know can sometimes be frustrating."

For the average homeowner, Stage 3 means no outdoor watering, even with a handheld hose, unless it is needed for your home's foundation.

Residents also won't be able to wash their vehicles unless it's taken it to a commercial car wash.

Contrary to what is called for in the current drought contingency plan, filling swimming pools will still be allowed.

There are also no plans to implement rate surcharges.
