Coastal Bend braces for potential water restrictions shift, gardening experts give conservation tips

With water levels currently at 31 percent, the next stage of water restrictions are soon underway.

The Coastal Bend is presently under Stage One water restrictions, but this situation could alter imminently.

Corpus Christi Water Resources Manager Esteban Ramos said that this change could occur within a matter of weeks.

"As of today, we're at 31 percent. We're projecting that we would enter into stage two sometime in mid-January," Ramos said. "That's why I encourage customers throughout the area of Corpus Christi and the surrounding areas that we supply, to look at how they can conserve water. Both on the inside and especially on the outside."

Ramos also spoke with 3NEWS about what new regulations would be enforced pertaining to outdoor watering.

"If we were to go into stage two water restrictions, the city of Corpus Christi water, is going to ask our customers to curtail back the outside watering. We're going to move to a once every other week watering schedule," Ramos said.

For gardeners, despite stricter water regulations, there are still ways to care for your plants. Gardening assistant manager Wyatt Page at Gill Garden Center, shared some tips for making sure your plants stay well-nourished even during water restrictions.

"So, they're not going to be using water as much as they would be in our warmer months. So, you definitely to dial the water back a little bit, establish landscape beds and lawns," Page said. "Really only need water about every two weeks right now without rain."

Page mentioned that if certain plants need more watering, hand watering is a viable option during restrictions. He also suggests planting native species adapted to South Texas weather conditions.
